Flash Gordon is a tribute to the somewhat muddled superhero of the same name; a man with no special powers, other than his rakish good looks, a history of playing football, and the uncanny ability to fly alien spacecraft, and who somehow repeatedly saves the Universe, thwarting untold evil empires. He is truly a hero for our financially addled times: all dash and no cash, as it were. The piece uses ultra-low frequency sound waves to shake a speaker suspended on music wire; this sounds the wire via a flexible hammer, making tones and moving the mirror finish stainless steel balls so that laser lights bounce off them. Playing under this is the first 9 seconds of the infamous Flash Theme (by Queen) time-stretched to last 7.5 minutes.
